David’s Psalm of praise

Psalm 145 (II):12-22, Doversdale 4, LM

1   O Lord, thou art my God and King;
          Thee will I magnify and praise:
     I will thee bless, and gladly sing
          Unto thy holy name always.

 2    Each day I rise I will thee bless,
          And praise thy name time without end.
 3    Much to be prais'd, and great God is;
          His greatness none can comprehend.

 4   Race shall thy works praise unto race,
          The mighty acts show done by thee.
 5   I will speak of the glorious grace,
          And honour of thy majesty;

     Thy wondrous works I will record.
 6        By men the might shall be extoll'd
     Of all thy dreadful acts, O Lord:
          And I thy greatness will unfold.

 7   They utter shall abundantly
          The mem'ry of thy goodness great;
     And shall sing praises cheerfully,
          Whilst they thy righteousness relate.

 8   The Lord our God is gracious,
          Compassionate is he also;

          hast broken may rejoice.
 
 9   All mine iniquities blot out,
          thy face hide from my sin.
10   Create a clean heart, Lord, renew

11   Cast me not from thy sight, nor take
          thy Holy Sp'rit away.
12   Restore me thy salvation's joy;
          with thy free Sp'rit me stay.

13   Then will I teach thy ways unto
          those that transgressors be;

14   The sec-ret of the Lord is with

15   To-wards the Lord my wait-ing eyes
          Con-tin-u-ly are set;
     For he it is that shall bring forth
          my feet out of the net.

16   O turn thee un-to me, O God,

 3   Lord, who shall stand, if thou, O Lord,
          should'st mark in-i-qui-ty?
 4   But yet with thee for-give-ness is,
          that fear'd thou may-est be.

 5   I wait for God, my soul doth wait,
          my hope is in his word.
 6   More than they that for morn-ing watch,
          my soul waits for the Lord;

     I say, more than they that do watch
          the morn-ing light to see.
 7   Let Is-ra-el hope in the Lord,
          for with him mer-cies be;

     And plen-te-ous re-demp-tion
          is ev-er found with him.
 8   And from all his in-i-qui-ties

You probably noticed the pauses, or fermatas, that occur in each of these tunes.

This is the “birdseye” symbol that we see at the end of lines 1 and 3 in Coleshill.In Martyrdom they are placed at the end of lines 2 and 4.

This article is the first of what we hope to be a regular feature on this site, to announce the Psalms that are scheduled for the coming Lord's Day services. These installments will include hyperlinks to the tune MIDI files to facilitate learning and practice.

Franconia is a short meter tune that is easy to learn. Since we are already very familiar with the tune St. Peter we will begin here with the closing Psalm. In stanza 5/verse 6, lines 2 and 4 each have an extra syllable; we add one beat to each of these lines to cover.

       My God, let me not be asham'd,
             nor foes triumph o'er me.

            thy paths, O teach thou me:
  5    And do thou lead me in thy truth,
            therein my teacher be:

  1    O blessed is the man to whom
            is freely pardoned
       All the transgression he hath done,
            whose sin is covered.

  2    Bless'd is the man to whom the Lord
            imputeth not his sin,
       And in whose sp'rit there is no guile,
            nor fraud is found therein.

  3    When as I did refrain my speech,
            and silent was my tongue,
       My bones then waxed old, because
            I roared all day long.

  4    For upon me both day and night
            thine hand did heavy lie,
       So that my moisture turned is
            in summer's drought thereby.

  5    I thereupon have unto thee
            my sin acknowledged,
       And likewise mine iniquity
            I have not covered:

       I will confess unto the Lord
            my trespasses, said I;
       And of my sin thou freely didst
            forgive th' iniquity.
